Causes & Conquest of Constipation-Part 5

Greetings! In today’s class we shall look at one day’s program which is very laxative!

Morning:

At least a half hour before breakfast, a glass of juice-grape, prune, or fresh apple.

.

Breakfast

Whole wheat zwieback with vegetable butter and one cup of ripe olives.

A liberal serving of either prunes, figs, or apricots.

A few nuts, other than roasted peanuts.

Any other fruits desired, some raw, until satisfied.

No drink.

Dinner (not closer than five hours to breakfast)

Baked potato, eat the skin. Make palatable with vegetable butter, plant-base cream and salt, or such additions as are agreeable.

A liberal serving of cooked spinach or other greens or of well-cooked onions.

One serving of a root like beets, carrots, parsnips, or turnips.

Supper (not closer than five hours to dinner)

Large serving of a laxative fruit such as prunes, figs, pears, or apricots.

A liberal supply of other fruit, both raw and cooked.

If not specially hungry, no bread. If hungry, one or two pieces of whole wheat bread and a few ripe olives.

No dessert; no drink.

At Bed-Time

A glass of fruit juice from the list offered for breakfast or better yet water.

If you awaken in the night too hungry to sleep, take a glass of water or half a glass of some sort of fruit juice.

NOTE: It is recognized that some people have sinned against their bodies so long that the stomachs and colons will not tolerate at first the full amount of cellulose contained in the above. They will have to “baby” themselves for a time and come back to a normal diet by degrees. If every constipating practice listed in previous paragraphs is discontinued, possible normal conditions may be restored.

Economy

If any student feels that any of the items in the laxative program are too expensive, let him look at the Constipating Program and note the items he does not now have, buy, and he will find one pays for the other. The Journal of the American Medical Association, October 18, page 1335, 1941, published a list of eleven harmful effects of mineral oil purgatives. It never corrects constipation but helps one to tolerate it.

The Cost of Constipation

Americans spend millions of dollars every year for cathartic drugs. It is cheaper to buy healthful foods. But there are other costs accruing from constipation—sickness, lost time, lost earnings, sickness expense, physical and mental agony. It is always cheaper to be well.

Note 1

“Indigestion and constipation,” says Dr. Lane of London, “are the starting causes of the diseases of civilization.”

“If you wish to produce cancer with a fair degree of certainty, supply a constipated subject with plenty of meat, and endeavor to deal with his constipation by means of irritating purgative drugs.”

It is not necessary to use yeast, mineral oil or laxative drugs. There are serious objections to all of them. None of them correct the condition, but merely help you to tolerate it. So long as one has to use any of them he is constipated.

Note 2

“When properly prepared, olives, like nuts, supply the place of butter and flesh meats. The oil as eaten in the olive is far preferable to animal oil or fat. It serves as a laxative. Its use will be found beneficial to consumptives, and it is healing to an inflamed irritated stomach.”

“Olives may be so prepared as to be eaten with good results at every meal. The advantages sought by the use of butter may be obtained by the eating of properly prepared oilves. The oil in the olives relieves constipation, and for consumptives, and for those who have inflamed irritated stomachs, it is better than any drug. As a food it is better than any oil coming second-hand from animals.”

Let’s Recap:

1.  How many hours should be in between our meals?

2.  What are three laxative fruits?

3.  What does Cathartic mean?

4. What can supply the place of dairy butter and flesh meats?
