‘At least nine-tenths of all chronic maladies with which doctors are called upon to deal might be successfully treated without the use of drugs by a physician well acquainted with the varied resources afforded by the science of nutrition.



’Inasmuch as ‘the disease and suffering which everywhere prevail are largely due to popular errors in regard to diet’, the chief purpose of this book is to make plain the manner of properly nourishing the body as the major factor in possessing normal health and natural immunity.”

The forces and methods which constitute that which we call “immunity” will be presented from many viewpoints in this book. There are two kinds of immunity; one natural and the other artificial. Not enough attention has been given to the former in proportion to that given to the latter.

Many eminent authorities confirm the truth of this serious pleasantry. Some other notable examples are given here.

Dr. Mikkel Hindhede, Denmark- ‘The two chief causes of disease are food and drink’
The Mayo Clinic- The Mayo clinic records reveal that from 80 to 90 percent of all the surgical work done in their hospital is done upon the stomach, intestines, and related organs.
Dr. Harvey W. Wiley- ‘I believe I would not be far out of the way to say that diet may be said to be a factor in every disease to which man is heir.’
Dr. Osler- The late Sir. William Osler, eminent English physician, said: ‘Ninety percent of all conditions outside of acute infections, contagious diseases, and traumatisms, are directly traceable to diet.’
Sir Arbuthnot Lane- Sir Arbuthnot Lane, noted London physician, says: ‘The food question is infinitely the most important problem of the present day….and if properly dealt with must result in the disappearance of the vast bulk of the diseases, misery, and death.’
G.K. Abbott, A.B., M.D., F.A.C.S.- ‘Man’s diet conduces to the occurrence of diseases representative of nearly all the most common and prominent of human ailments.’
Haven Emerson, M.D.- ‘We could actually add more years to the average expectancy of man’s life by suitable variety and amount of food than by eliminating any of the prevalent communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and syphilis.’
T.F. Arbercrombie, M.D.- ‘I maintain that if all human beings were well nourished, every cell in the body as God intended it should be, we would have most of our public health and medical problems solved.’
George R. Minot- ‘With faulty food, there is faulty nutrition, faulty functions, faulty structure, disease.’
Sir Robert McCarrison- Sir Robert McCarrison, M.D., LL.D, D.Sc., F.R.C.P., London, by feeding pigeons, guinea pigs, and monkeys upon ‘deficiency foods,’ such as are commonly consumed in civilized countries, induced in them every known disease of the digestive tract, and disease in all their organs.

When serving as Director of Nutritional Research, Pasteur Institute, Coonoor, India, Major GeneralSir Robert McCarrison, Kt., C.I.E., LLD., F.R.C.P., L.M.S., said: ‘I found…that no organ or tissue of the body escapes the effects of faulty food deficient in vitamins or in other elements and complexes necessary for normal nutrition; and that animals fed on such faulty food are prone to be invaded by microbes of all kinds….Properly fed animals remain remarkably free from disease, while improperly fed animals are remarkably subject to it. Do these discoveries apply equally to human beings? The answer is undoubtedly in the affirmative.’


Diseases Produced Under Control

Among the morbid conditions produced by Sir Robert McCarrison, M.D., in animals by improper feeding he names these: pneumonia, pleurisy, bronchitis, infections of the nose, adenoids; infections of the ear; infections of the eye; diseases of the stomach;-growths, ulcer and cancer; inflammation of the small and large intestine including ulcers and colitis, dysentery, diarrhea and constipation; inflammation and stone in the bladder, Bright’s Disease; diseases of the skin such as loss of hair, dermatitis and abscesses; gangrene of feet and tail; disease of male and female reproductive organs; premature birth of young or death before birth; anemia; dropsy; enlarged, cystic and suppurating glands; goiter; neuritis; nervousness; irritability; beriberi; scurvy; decaying teeth; rickets; diseases of the heart; inflammation and degeneration of nervous tissue; feeble growth; poor appetite; lassitude; weakness; ill-temper; and ferocity. ‘All these states of ill-health had a common causation; faulty nutrition with or without infection.’

In the address from which the above statement is taken, Dr. McCarrison made the following profound announcement:


Food is the Chief Medicine

‘Of all the medicines created out of the earth, food is the chief.’

In some of the ancient dynasties of China there was an Imperial Dietitian as well as an Imperial Physician. Hu Se-Hui, who occupied this position from 1314 to 1330 A.D., wrote a book called ‘The Principles of Correct Diet.’ He gave sixty-two different diets which would supply the vitamins of the B group. The motto of his book was, ‘Food alone cures many diseases.’-J. and L. G. Needham in Journal A.M.A. 117:1418, 1941.


Eat for Health

When meals are planned at home or selected at a public eating place, do you ever raise the question, Does this food contain elements needed by the heart, brain, nerves, and all the organs and their processes? No! Nine-tenths of the people never give a thought to this. They ask but one question, Do I like the food? That and that alone determines what we will or will not eat. Yet it is more important to us that we know how to nourish our bodies and those of our children than to understand the inner workings of the automobile, the mysteries of the radio, the latest fashion or movie, or to learn all the languages of the earth, the doings of the ancients, the depths of the fourth dimensions, or the marvels of the atom. To be sure, these matters are important, but they are of absolutely no value without health.
