Varieties of Indigestion-Part 3

Greetings! In today’s class we shall look into some more varieties of indigestion (6-14); as well as the importance of eating earlier in the day, compared to late at night. .




“For thrifty use of food, eat most heartily early in the day. A nourishing breakfast is not only important for health and morals; it also means most efficient use of food.” 

Food eaten early in the day is digested and absorbed largely during the most active daytime hours, studies at the University of Chicago have shown. Therefore the body is likely to get the most food food from eaten at breakfast and at noon. In contrast, food eaten at night shortly before going to bed, is digested and absorbed largely during the period when the body needs it least and when the excess is likely to be deposited as fat.

“It means that any one who goes shy on breakfast, slights lunch, and then loads up a heavy meal in the evening may actually be wasting food, because he cannot use it to best advantage. Nutritionists of the U.S. Department of Agriculture say that children who go with little or no breakfast, are likely to be undernourished, because they cannot take a large enough quantity of food at the other two meals to supple their daily needs. The forgotten or hasty breakfast, and the skimpy lunch, may be responsible for Junior’s drowsiness and low grades at school, Jane’s poor appetite and loss of weight, father’s morning temper, mother’s overweight, and even grandma’s edginess or hurt feelings.” R&H p.14, Feb, 1948

6. Eating When Tired

When the body is exhausted the stomach shares in that condition and is not prepared to take on digestive work. Take water or fruit juices and rest before eating a regular meal.

7. Loss of Sleep

When one has lost considerable sleep, it is of more importance than food. One should get the needed sleep first.

8. Nervousness

Just plain “nervousness” is a very common cause of disturbed digestion. Help for this can be found in reading God’s Word.

9. Mental Depression

When one is worried or mentally disturbed over some matter which has arisen, the stomach will not secrete its juices and cannot digest food. Take water or fruit juices, but do not eat until the mind has had time to become composed and adjusted. 

10. Unripe fruit

Eating unripe fruit can cause very serious indigestion.

11. Spoiled Food

Eating spoiled food can not only cause indigestion, but may endanger the life.

12. Condiments

Condiments-mustard, pepper, etc.-are very irritating to the stomach and contribute to indigestion.

13. Bread Not Well Done

Bread should be well done all the way through-well baked. Too often the interior of a loaf of bread can be squeezed into a ball of dough. Such bread easily ferments in the stomach.

14. Fresh Bread

Yeast bread is not ready to eat until it is at least twenty-four hours old. Most people do not know this and have become accustomed to the taste of fresh bread, and it may require a little time to change their tastes, but it can be done. The reward will be added length of life.


Since learning in our previous segment entitled, “The Mysteries of Life,” you will not use soda or baking powder, and those fresh breads will not appear in your menus hereafter. However, there are ways of making delicious small bread which may be eaten hot.
