Greetings! In today’s class, we shall study about low acid in the stomach, two kinds of people, and share a special announcement at the end!
Low Acid In The Stomach
This is a condition opposite to high acid and some of the symptoms are opposite. When food is eaten the meal may feel like a heavy load, very burdensome. When it is digested and gone the stomach feels much better and you may wish you never had to eat again. It feels best when empty, whereas in high acidity it feels better when something is in it.
A common cause of this condition is that of overworking the stomach glands, as in the case of high acidity, until they become exhausted and go on a strike and refuse to produce the required amount of acid. Thus low acidity in the stomach may arise from the same causes as high acidity and therefore the same list of causes should be scanned and all violations abandoned.
Dr. J.H. Kellogg believes constipation to be one cause of low acid in the stomach. In this condition liquids are useful but they should not be eaten with solid foods because they dilute the gastric juice which is already too weak to do its work. Fats should be eaten sparingly. Roughage must be taken out of the food by straining it the same for high acid. Two ounces of lemon juice, or six ounces of either grapefruit juice or unsweetened pineapple juice taken with each meal will help to supplement the absent hydrochloric acid and so aid digestion. Rest after meals is helpful as is the application of a little exterior heat to the stomach after eating.
Furthermore, do you know what is a frequent cause of constipation? “… the superfine white flour is not the best… It is a frequent cause of constipation and other unhealthful conditions.” MH 300 Avoid white flour, could in turn help those who are suffering with low acid in the stomach. Also, do you what is “better than any drug” to relieve constipation?
“The oil in the olives relieves constipation; and for consumptives, and for those who have inflamed, irritated stomachs, it is better than any drug. As a food it is better than any oil coming secondhand from animals.” The Health Food Ministry 34
Two Kinds of People
You have observed that the conditions we have discussed in this class—sour stomach, high acid, low acid, ulcer—are caused by habits very commonly practiced and dearly loved. When you recognize the commonness of these habits you can understand why these afflictions are so common. Manifestly, if we wish to avoid these ailments, or already have them and wish to correct them, there must be great changes made in our habits of living.
This lesson is hard to give and hard to take because it cuts squarely across so many cherished habits. However, you can change, and do it easily, and soon work a transformation in yourself. Other people are doing it and find more joy than can be expressed in words. This is what we want to encourage you to do.
“With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.” Mark 10:27
Two kinds of people will be in this class. Some love the bad habits more than they do good health or the keeping of the laws of life which
are the laws of God. Others wish to learn as much as possible and are willing to surrender every harmful practice for their own good, the good of their families, and in humble obedience to Him who doth all things well. We must individually ask ourselves, which class do I belong to?
