More Health Principles-Part 6

Greetings! In today’s class, we shall discuss the importance of sunshine.

The sun seems to be the mother of all nature’s processes, the source of all energy, and necessary to all life and growth. The vitamins are the product of sunlight. Sunshine is antiseptic. Scientific research and experiments have taught us wonderful lessons in the value of sunlight, which would require volumes to relate. It has become an important factor in the treatment of several maladies.

How fitting it is for our Lord to be called the Sun of Righteousness. “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.” Mal. 4:2

The following paragraphs are not intended to cover the use of sunlight as a treatment, but to give a few simple rules to prevent sickness. The follow quotations from the Pen of Inspiration are comprehensive, practical, and easy to understand and follow:

“Life in the open air is good for body and mind. It is God’s medicine for the restoration of health. Pure air, good water, sunshine, the beautiful surroundings of nature—these are His means for restoring the sick to health in natural ways. To the sick it is worth more than silver or gold to lie in the sunshine or in the shade of the trees.” 7T 85

In building, many make careful provision for their plants and flowers. The greenhouse or window devoted to their use is warm and sunny; for without warmth, air, and sunshine, plants would not live and flourish. If these conditions are necessary to the life of plants, how much more necessary are they for our own health and that of our families and guests!” MH 275

If we would have our homes the abiding place of health and happiness we must place them above the miasma and fog of the lowlands, and give free entrance to heaven’s life-giving agencies. Dispense with heavy curtains, open the windows and the blinds, allow no vines, however beautiful, to shade the windows, and permit no trees to stand so near the house as to shut out the sunshine. The sunlight may fade the drapery and the carpets, and tarnish the picture frames; but it will bring a healthy glow to the cheeks of the children. Those who have the aged to provide for should remember that these especially need warm, comfortable rooms. Vigor declines as years advance, leaving less vitality with which to resist unhealthful influences; hence the greater necessity for the aged to have plenty of sunlight, and fresh, pure air.” MH 275

Shade trees and shrubbery too close and dense around a house are unhealthy; for they prevent a free circulation of air, and prevent the rays of the sun from shining sufficiently through. In consequence of this, a dampness gathers in the house. Especially in wet seasons the sleeping rooms become damp, and those who sleep in the beds are troubled with rheumatism, neuralgia, and lung complaints, which generally end in consumption. Numerous shade trees cast off many leaves, which, if not immediately removed, decay, and poison the atmosphere. A yard beautified with scattering trees, and some shrubbery, at a proper distance from the house, has a happy, cheerful influence upon the family, and, if well taken care of, will prove no injury to health. Dwellings, if possible, should be built upon high and dry ground. If a house be built where water settles around it, remaining for a time, and then drying away, a poisonous miasma arises, and fever and ague, sore throat, lung diseases, and fevers will be the result.” 2SM 464

“Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:” Eccl. 11:7

“Many have expected that God would keep them from sickness merely because they have asked him to do so. But God did not regard their prayers, because their faith was not made perfect by works. God will not work a miracle to keep those from sickness who have no care for themselves, but are continually violating the laws of health, and make no efforts to prevent disease. When we do all we can on our part to have health, then may we expect that the blessed results will follow, and we can ask God in faith to bless our efforts for the preservation of health. He will then answer our prayer, if his name can be glorified thereby. But let all understand that they have a work to do. God will not work in a miraculous manner to preserve the health of persons who are taking a sure course to make themselves sick, by their careless inattention to the laws of health.” 2SM 464

The guestchamber should have equal care with the rooms intended for constant use. Like the other bedrooms, it should have air and sunshine, and should be provided with some means of heating, to dry out the dampness that always accumulates in a room not in constant use. Whoever sleeps in a sunless room, or occupies a bed that has not been thoroughly dried and aired, does so at the risk of health, and often of life.”

Thank you! I was searching for something to share during Health Spotlight for Sabbath services on 10/31/20 and the Lord led me to this great article. But it is also a double blessing because it encouraged me to search for more on the sun’s role in hair growth and I was led to another wonderful article about the use of onion juice. (I’m a Covid-19 survivor but still suffering after effects…sudden hair loss being the most recent). Certainly the Lord is our provider and supplies all our needs!

Praise the Lord, thank you kindly for sharing! Yes indeed He is, shall be praying for you. “The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:” Numbers 6:24, 25
