 In today’s class we shall study vitamin C! This vitamin is especially essential during this time of the year, when it is easier to get a cold.

 

 

 

Vitamin C

The nutrition and structure of the teeth are affected very early in the absence of vitamin C intake. Later the tiny capillary blood vessels become weakened and cause hemorrhages throughout the body, bleeding of the gums takes place, the teeth loosen, the joints become swollen, and the bones become porous and fragile. These symptoms are character of the vitamin C deficiency disease known as scurvy, which has been known for hundred of years…”

Another authority says:

Scurvy-injury to the capillary blood vessels with tendency to hemorrhage, bleeding gums, loose teeth, tooth decay, are chief among the results of deficiency of vitamin C, In some cases the skin becomes discolored from a slight bruise which would not harm a healthy skin.

Many Americans are suffering from scurvy in mild forms and do not recognize it. To protect from tooth decay requires twice as much vitamin C as to protect from scurvy.

“Liberal amounts of vitamin C in the body increase its ability to resist toxins formed by certain species of bacteria

Because vitamin C is easily destroyed by cooking, it is important that liberal amounts of raw fruits and vegetables be used everyday. An ounce of orange juice, grapefruit juice,  tomato juice, or raw cabbage juice are good sources. In addition, sprouting seeds are an excellent source.

Collards, turnip greens, mustard greens, kale, water cress, spinach, dandelion greens, sweet peppers, kohl-rabbi, rutabagas, turnips, Brussel sprouts cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, asparagus, fresh and canned tomatoes, green peas, corn salad, radishes.
Guavas, mangoes, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, tangerines, currants, strawberries, gooseberries, raspberries, cantaloupes.
Sprouted seeds.

Good Sources

Endive, cucumbers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, parsnips, rhubarb, leeks, onions, globe artichokes.
Pineapples, cherries, cranberries, papayas, bananas, peaches, apples, avocados, watermelon.
